Description

Although following the stereotypical traditional roles of wife, mother, supporter of her husband's work and manager of a household, Elizabeth Gaskell truly was a radical woman of her time. We see this in themes running through her books - single women, poverty, class, employer/employee relations and industrial Manchester. Not only this, her personal life shows that she thought and acted in ways different to many women of her time.

We bring out Gaskell's radical approach to life by visiting the Portico Library then travelling by bus to Plymouth Grove, South Manchester where she lived for 15 years and where she wrote many of her novels. Here we learn more about her life, and other radical women she met. We finish by taking delicious tea and cake!

Maximum 20 people. Price is £17 plus £1.65 Eventbrite booking fee. The price includes donation to the Portico Library, entry and visit with tea and cake to Gaskell House, services of the Guide.

Meet Manchester Town Hall Steps, Albert Square, M2 5DB. Tour starts at 12.30 and finishes back in Manchester City Centre at 1630.

Transport by bus not included. Approximate bus fare £4.50 return or bring travel pass

Please book via Eventbrite. Any queries to Kate Dibble email katedibble@aol.com mobile 07905 110197
